Germany’s star in the private new car charts was the Dacia Sandero III in the first two months of 2022. But the small car is also the best on the used market Renault Nissan– Daughter asked. Rightly? We took a close look at a base model of the second generation from 2017.

The facelift version of the Sandero II was considered “Essential” with a 73 hp one-liter engine as a case for stingy and minimalists. According to the Schwacke database, the Romanian once cost 7,290 euros ex dealer – including a spare wheel, minimalist Blaupunkt radio and VAT. The one used by a security company in its first life now stands Sandero in Uetersen, Schleswig-Holstein, at Auto-Kontor Nord for 3995 euros. That’s a record low price for a four-and-a-half-year-old given the current high prices for used cars. But what do you get offered?

Dacia Sandero used: A Clio or Corsa costs twice as much
His eventful past life is our testSandero to watch. After 133,605 kilometers, the driver’s seat cover tore across a wide area, and the door seal at belt height has dissolved. A smaller dent also affected the C-pillar and rear door on the passenger side. And in the sunlight, adhesive residue from the former company lettering can not only be guessed at. It doesn’t matter, many pragmatic used buyers might think. Ideally, you stuff the seat upholstery yourself with needle and thread, repair the dent with the touch-up pen and, at most, treat the Dacia to a hardware store polish. That’s the only way the little one stays Sandero used the hoped-for price hit: below 4000 euros you will otherwise look in vain for models from the late 2017 model year.
The Sandero masters the art of omission well. Self-explanatory operation and passable ergonomics. Sturdy plastics but disastrous seat covers.
A similarly old Renault Clio or Opel Corsa costs twice as much with a comparable utility value. Equipment highlights are offered by the Sandero not against it. Like hardly any other modern car, it masters the art of omission: windows are cranked, central locking and air conditioning are conspicuous by their absence. What counts: Four, if necessary five people can travel dry and as economically as possible from A to B. Six liters are enough for the growling three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with 73 hp. However, overtaking maneuvers or speeds beyond 130 km/h are not recommended with this engine.
After more than three orbits of the world, the Sandero is still driving in a very mannerly manner
Nevertheless, the basicSandero not antiquated: Four airbags, ABS and ESP are on board. And in the Euro NCAP crash test in 2013 it was enough for four stars. The Euro 6 emissions standard for the new unit introduced in 2017 corresponds to the class standard at the time. It is gratifying that the eventful previous life impressed our test car only a little. After more than three orbits of the earth, he drives Sandero quite mannered. Neither do the axles rumble, nor does a wheel bearing howl. The fact that the brakes are no longer fresh and the engine shows its slightly oil-damp side is also the case with significantly more expensive brands after this mileage.

Tested used Dacia Sandero II
The quality of the paint is thin: the primer shines through both on the entrances and on the boot sill. There are no serious rust spots to complain about. The exhaust and wishbones are already visibly rotting, but so far this is nothing more than a visual defect. Our tip: Drive with the 90 hp turbo petrol and diesel engines Sandero faster and still remains extraordinarily economical.
