If you own a 2020 4K OLED TV from LG Electronics, you might want to disable automatic updates. A new firmware is supposed to drastically reduce the maximum brightness in game mode.
The current firmware version for European 4K OLED televisions from LG from 2020 is 03.11.30. Anyone who operates their television of the popular CX or GX series (possibly also BX or WX affected) with this software status should not have any problems yet. In the USA, several users report in the AVSforum that their gaming mode has a much lower maximum brightness after installing a new firmware version 03.21.09 (version number differs from the European one). When calibrated, the TV in gaming mode should just reach a maximum of 525 nits, before that it was 650 nits – a reduction of almost 20 percent!
Reduction in brightness visible to the naked eye!
The reduction in brightness can not only be measured, but should also be visible to the naked eye! The reduction in brightness can be demonstrated in small, bright images and large-area displays. In the end, you get a more matt picture impression, as if the LG OLED TV had “dimmed down”, which the TV does automatically after a short time (if not many areas of the image change – e.g. Windows desktop).
Protection against burn-in in gaming?
But why all of this? We can only really explain it in such a way that LG wants to protect its users’ TVs from so-called burn-in. Games are probably the content that has the most static picture elements (apart from linear TV channels without rotating logo positions). And since far more users of 4K OLED televisions have probably discovered for themselves in recent months with the market launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S, the risk of permanent impairment of the image display increases.
Deactivate automatic updates (for now)
The second explanation would be that this is just a “bug” that LG Electronics addresses with additional firmware. The update 03.21.09 has not yet been rolled out to all TV sets in the USA and the hope remains that the Koranic TV manufacturer will remedy this problem before the final distribution to European or German 4K OLED TVs. Hence our recommendation, first deactivate the automatic update function of your 2020 4K OLEDs (BX, CX, GX, WX) and observe what this brightness reduction is all about. We’ll keep you up to date!
