Do you hear “green needle” or “brainstorming”? New riddle is conquering the internet

A new riddle is circulating on the internet. In a sound clip you can hear both “green needle” and “brainstorm”. Two words that are not at all similar and do not sound like each other, but you can still hear both in the fragment.

A new TikTok is going viral right now. It is a video by TikTokker Emily Sophie. In the video you only hear a sound. But that sound is very confusing.

“Green needle” and “brainstorm”

In the TikTok, which has been viewed no less than 5.7 million times, you see Emily and you receive the message that you can “only hear the word you are thinking of”. The words in question are “green needle” and “brainstorm”. And yes, it is really the same fragment.

The video has also been shared on Twitter, where it has been viewed more than 2.5 million times. The reactions are all equally confused there. Because how is it possible that you can hear the two words depending on which word you want to hear.

Not new

The fragment is not new. In 2018, it already surfaced once via social media. It concerns the sound of a toy from the children’s series Ben 10. That toy should simply say “Brainstorm”, the name of one of the characters. But you can still hear “green needle” when you try to hear it.

Valerie Hazan, an expert in hearing and phonetic sciences at University College London, explained it to Huffington Post in 2018. She speaks of a perception switch, which works like a light switch. By wanting to hear a certain word, your brain is already preparing to hear that sound, and the sound signals you receive will also be more easily converted to that word. So by setting that switch to “brainstorm” or “green needle”, you will hear that word.
