Although everyone suspected that The Weeknd would have a chance to win multiple Grammys, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye was left empty-handed after the nomination was announced. The Weeknd has had an absolute top year with a successful album “After Hours” and the monster hit Blinding Lights. But the Recording Academy disagrees.
The Recording Academy caused some surprises with the announcement of the nominees for the Grammys of 2021. The biggest shock came to The Weeknd, who did not receive any nomination after a top year.
The Weeknd vs. the Grammys
The Weeknd fans were left in shock after the nomination was announced. They had expected at least one big nomination for The Weeknd, but there was no nomination even in the smaller categories. The singer himself is not happy about this either.
On Twitter he spoke out about the Grammys. “The Grammys remain corrupt,” it said. “You owe me, my fans and the music industry transparency.” It didn’t stop there, as in a later tweet he also made it clear that he refuses to attend the Grammy ceremony for a performance or to present an award. The Weeknd had been preparing for his performance at the Grammys for weeks, but that was in vain, because “I think no nomination means you weren’t invited.”
Drake has been nominated in three categories this year. With the video clip of Life Is Good he has a chance to win the Grammy for Best Music Video and with his song Laugh Now Cry Later with Lil Dirk he can win in the categories Best Melodic Rap Performance and Best Rap Song.
Although Drake is “recognized by the Recording Academy”, he agrees with The Weeknd’s statement. He gave his opinion through his Instagram Story. “I think we should stop being shocked at the lack of connection these award shows have with the music that made an impact. We have to accept that what used to be seen as the highest form of recognition for artists no longer matters. It’s like a family member who you keep hoping will change, but you simply can’t change his habits. ”
“A few days ago I said that The Weeknd was a certainty for Album of Song of the Year. And I had countless logical reasons for that, but it never goes as you expect it to. ”
In a second post, he shares some more names of artists that he believes deserved a nomination. “Lil Baby, Pop Smoke, PartyNextDoor and Popcaan. There are too many names missing to be able to name them… ”
Rap star Nicki Minaj also shared Drake’s post on her Instagram Story. She too has spoken out against the Grammys in recent days. She wrote on Twitter about her experience with the award show.
“I’ll never forget that the Grammys didn’t give me the Best New Artist award when I had seven songs that hit the Billboard charts at the same time and were bigger than any female rapper in the past decade. I then inspired an entire generation. But they gave the award to the white man Bon Iver. ” Nicki Minaj has already received 10 nominations for the Grammys in the past, but was unable to cash any. Her last nomination dates from 2016.
