DTM Norisring: Maximilian Götz with an emotional exclamation mark

Maximilian Götz made no secret of how emotional his home win at the Norisring was. He suppressed tears under his helmet, plus the whole family is there, then his colorful main sponsor also shapes the picture on the street circuit – yes, and then there’s the chance for the title. Before the last race on Sunday, Götz is third behind Liam Lawson (AF Corse / 224 points) and Kelvin van der Linde (Abt / 206). And the momentum speaks for the 35-year-old Götz.
It’s a special moment for him. “I came here for the first time in 1994, and Liam wasn’t even planned,” joked Götz about 19-year-old Lawson. “It’s very emotional to be here again, it’s a fourth chance. I drove Formula BMW, Formula 3, the old DTM and now the GT3 DTM, in which I have a chance for the title. That feels crazy, ”said Götz.

“Most important victory of my career”

No question about it: the German has made an impressive return with the success. “This is the most important victory of my career,” said Götz: “The journey was long, we had problems with performance and strategy recently, but we kept a cool head. The season ends when the last checkered flag falls. The racing god will then decide what will happen. “

Does an unusual kind of preparation pay off after all, even though Lawson and van der Linde have long been considered the hotter favorites than Götz? Götz was missing the decisive percent recently, his performances were solid, without the big outliers upwards.

The three DTM title candidates.

In preparation for the finale, Mercedes-AMG had recreated the Norisring on an airfield in order to simulate the special features of the non-permanent street circuit. Götz also put in a test day at Hockenheim himself on the way to the Norisring. “Of course that helps,” says Götz, “that is also part of the game. We want to be the best. We are a strong team. “
What is still missing: Performance in qualifying, because Götz was only fifth there. At the Norisring, however, the starting position is less important than anywhere else. The HRT driver quickly fought his way to the top and then let his Mercedes-AMG GT3 fly. The title rivals Lawson and van der Linde, who finished third and fourth, had no chance that day.

Lawson has Götz on the note

Therefore, the front runner now also sees Götz as the toughest competitor, with a 19 point lead and 28 points that can still be won on Sunday. “He was great, super fast. The pace of the Mercedes is very strong, ”said Lawson. His route: “I do what I always do. I hope that it will be enough. ”
