Electronic Arts (EA) has announced the name of the popular football game simulation EA SPORTS FIFA from July 2023: EA SPORTS FC. The “FC” stands for “Football Club”. This confirms the rumor that has been circulating since March 2022: Publisher EA is renaming its successful FIFA after almost 30 years. According to EA, the football game simulation community consists of over 150 million people.

EA promises that all the features of EA SPORTS FIFA will remain: “The same great experiences, modes, leagues, tournaments, clubs and athletes will be there. Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Pro Clubs and VOLTA Football will all be there. Our unique The breadth of licenses with 19,000+ players, 700+ teams, 100+ stadiums and 30 leagues that we’ve invested in over decades will continue to exist – only in EA SPORTS FC, including exclusive partnerships with the Bundesliga, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, MLS – and there’s more to come.”
EA plans to share more details in the coming months. In particular, how it intends to further develop the game together with its partners.
A new FIFA game is yet to come
But before it comes to the separation from FIFA, EA wants to deliver “the most comprehensive game of all time” under the name “EA SPORTS FIFA” for another year. We make sure that the next FIFA will be the best of all time, with more features, game modes, World Cup content, clubs, leagues, competitions and players than any other FIFA title before.” This new and final FIFA game will be released in autumn 2022.
Hence the name change
Publisher Electronic Arts releases a new version of its football simulation “FIFA” for PC and consoles every year. EA has to pay the world football association FIFA a hefty brand premium for this. According to Spiegel Online, it was around 150 million US dollars a year. Four letter use only: FIFA. The company intends to save on these expenses in the future.
According to Spiegel Online, EA is not terminating the collaboration (only) because of the license fees. But FIFA also slowed down EA in the choice of cooperation partners. EA has always had to give preference to FIFA’s partners. This will end in July 2023.
