eBook readers are practical and therefore very popular. No wonder that there are now a large number of providers. The best known are manufacturers such as Amazon Kindle, Tolino, Pocketbook and Kobo, who charge up to € 300.00 for an eBook reader. But which models are really worth their money? Stiftung Warentest investigated this question in the current issue (May 2020).

For example, Stiftung Warentest tested nine different eBook readers from the most popular providers. The image quality, handling, processing of the devices and their battery life were examined more closely. The Tolino Epic 2 * with the overall grade of 1.7 scored the best. The image quality and the processing of the eBook reader were particularly positive. The testers found slight weaknesses in the battery life of the Epos 2. Another disadvantage of the device is its high price. With a price of almost € 269.00, the Epos 2 is by far the most expensive reader in the test.

But cheaper models were also convincing in the test. Stiftung Warentest recommended the Kindle Paperwhite * and Pocketbook Touch HD 3 * devices, which cost almost half as much, as price-performance winners. The 119.99 Euro Kindle Paperwhite has achieved an overall grade of 1.8. Its strengths are image quality and workmanship. There were deductions in handling, where the Paperwhite was rated only “satisfactory”. The Pocketbook Touch HD 3 for EUR 149.99 achieved an overall grade of 1.7. Nothing was really criticized in the test, only the handling just received the grade “good”. But the testers were impressed by the excellent battery life.

Reading apps
can’t keep up with eBook readers

By the way, the Stiftung Warentest test also considered reading apps for smartphones or tablets. However, they are a less convenient alternative to the eBook reader. So if you are planning to switch to digital books, investing in an eBook reader is definitely worth it.
