Ed Sheeran has been announced as the new shirt sponsor of English football club Ipswich Town. The singer has been a fan of the club that plays in the League One, the English third division, and will be on their jersey for one year.
“The football club is a big part of the local community and this is my way of showing my support,” Ed Sheeran explains his decision to the BBC. “I have always enjoyed going to Portman Road stadium and look forward to going back as soon as supporters are allowed back into the stadiums.”
New American Owners
Ipswich Town FC is one of the oldest football clubs and has had two successful periods. In the 1961-1962 season the club won its only English title and in the late 1970s and early 1980s Ipswich experienced some successful European campaigns. The club last played in the Premier League at the beginning of this century and has been going through a difficult period ever since.
Last month, however, it became known that a consortium made up of investors from the United States had acquired Ipswich Town. Since then there has been hope again among the fans of the club from Suffolk. “With the new owners from the US there will certainly be exciting times for Ipswich fans, including myself,” said Sheeran.
With Ed Sheeran’s sponsorship, both the women and men of Ipswich Town will play next season with the + – = ÷ x logo and the word ‘Tour’ on their jerseys. Since +, x and ÷ were three of the singer’s previous albums, he seems to be announcing a new album and / or a new tour with this. “Everything will be revealed in time,” he says.
