Jeff Bezos, the boss of Amazon, is no longer the richest person in the world. He will be dethroned by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the Bloomberg financial news agency calculated.
The rise of the Tesla stock on the stock exchange (+4.8 percent on Thursday), Musk is now worth $ 188.5 billion on paper. That is one and a half billion more than Bezos. The 49-year-old engineer, born in South Africa, is not only the man behind Tesla, but also behind the space company SpaceX.
Bezos has led Bloomberg’s billionaires index since October 2017, and was the first to hit $ 200 billion in assets. His internet company Amazon is ubiquitous. He also benefited from the boom in online shopping during the corona pandemic.
But for Musk, 2020 was even more special. In just twelve months, he saw his fortune grow by more than $ 150 billion. Bloomberg says it may be “the fastest wealth creation ever.”
Musk owns 20 percent of Tesla’s stock, which went up a whopping 743 percent last year. In addition, he also owns stock options, which account for a paper profit of $ 42 billion.
Despite all that wealth, Musk previously stated that he does not attach importance to material things. Outside of his Tesla and SpaceX shares, he would have few assets. In his own words, he wants to use his money to contribute to the exploration of space and to make life possible on Mars.
Bloomberg’s billionaire index has changed a few things since the beginning of the year. Less than a week into the new year, Chinese businessman Zhong Shanshan has also jumped Warren Buffett to sixth place after getting $ 15 billion richer from the rise of his water company.
