Erase safely – the top tools from PC-WELT readers

Erotic pictures, confidential e-mails, personal documents – with these programs you can permanently delete private items. Or the whole hard drive before the Ebay sale.

When you delete files in Windows, the operating system just moves the deleted file to the Recycle Bin. For the time being it can be restored there without any problems. But even after emptying the recycle bin, even inexperienced PC users can easily restore the file. Freeware like Recuva makes this possible. With it you can easily rescue accidentally deleted files – command line or even programming language skills are not necessary. However, even those who are curious can use it to scan the hard drive they have sold. Or your USB stick. Or your SD memory card. You should definitely delete the hardware from the download photo gallery with a special tool before throwing it away or selling it on Ebay.

This is how the erasure tools (also called erasers) proceed: Instead of just freeing up the space occupied by the file to be deleted, erasers overwrite the said file with random data. Restoration only becomes impossible or at least extremely time-consuming after overwriting.

The number of downloads alone does not necessarily say anything about the quality. Because many small, unknown programs do very well. But some people are bothered by the language (English) or a not entirely modern design – and that’s why they don’t download it. Therefore, take a look at the less popular tools; it might be worth it.

Attention: To increase the effect and to make it even more difficult for data restorers, you can still encrypt the files to be deleted with the above tools before deleting them. The assembly is then almost impossible. And remember that Windows creates shadow copies in the background, which you should also delete or deactivate immediately if your deleted data is to be securely erased.
