This is why you should opt for plastic tiles in the bathroom
In the bathroom it is often very humid, which is why it is smart to choose tiles as wall covering. But did you know that these do not necessarily have to be ceramic or natural stone tiles? Plastic tiles have many more advantages! In addition, they look just like real tiles, so that will not be the fault. We list 6 benefits for you.
- Easy to maintain
Plastic tiles are very easy and quick to clean and therefore easy to maintain. Because the tiles have no joints made of real grout, you do not have to worry that they will get dirty. After all, joints are always the most difficult to clean on a tile wall, but with plastic tiles you do not suffer from that!
- Easy to install yourself
In addition to being easy to maintain, they are also real tiles for the do-it-yourselfer. You really don’t have to have a tiler come here, just do it yourself! You can simply place many of these tiles with mounting glue or sealant and if they need to be cut to size, you can do so with a saw. You do not need any special tools for it!
- UV resistant
The tiles are also UV resistant. This means that they will not discolour quickly when exposed to sunlight. In addition, they do not have real joints, so they cannot turn yellow. This makes the tiles last longer and they are actually very durable!
- Good value for money
Did you know that the price difference between plastic tiles and regular tiles is almost nothing? While there are many more advantages! In addition, you do not have to rent a tiler or buy the special tools, such as a grinder, so this also saves a lot of money. The price-quality ratio of plastic tiles is therefore very good!
- Mutes the sound
Because ceramic and natural stone tiles are hard, it can sometimes get quite chilly in the bathroom. You won’t be bothered by this with plastic tiles, they just dampen the sound! This makes the bathroom less chilly and your housemates are less bothered if you take a shower early in the morning.
- Different colors and motifs
Another big advantage of the plastic tiles is that they are available in all kinds of colors and motifs. So you have imitation natural stone, copper and concrete yourself! Normally natural stone is quite expensive and difficult to clean, but with synthetic tiles these problems are solved and it just seems real!
- Multiple functions
Did you know that due to the anti-slip layer on the tiles, you can also use them as a floor tile? For example, you could really make a unity of the bathroom by extending the tiles of the wall onto the floor. Super nice right?
Sustainable wallcovering? Then choose plastic tiles!
In addition to all these many advantages, plastic wall tiles have another big advantage. They are very durable. You might not think so, since they are of course made of plastic, but we will let you know why it is!
- Safe and trusted material
Plastic wall tiles are made of PVC. This is a very safe and trusted material as it is also commonly used for blood bags, plastic tubing for surgery, safety bags for medicines, and many other applications in the medical field. It is also often used in electrical cables and in safe and durable toys. So it is a good and strong material, which means that it can also last a long time.
Because PVC can be easily converted into all kinds of different shapes, it is also very easy to recycle. Much of the waste from these tiles is ground up and reused in a factory. The makers of these plastic tiles, Dumawall, are even willing to accept your old tiles and process them into new products!
- Consumes little fossil fuels
Much less fossil fuels are used when making the plastic wall tiles than with other materials. This is because PVC consists of 57% salt and this is a raw material that is common in nature!
- No hazardous materials
Another point why the tiles are durable is that as little use as possible is made of hazardous substances. For example, these tiles are not printed with solvent inks, these are harmful inks with usually a strong odor, but UV ink is put into the tiles. In addition, they also do not use lead for plastic tiles, although this is often found in other materials.
These are the three different types of plastic tiles
There are also differences in plastic tiles. You have three different Dumawall types. You have to place these three types in different ways and look a bit different. That is why it is smart to think carefully in advance which of the three you will use!
- Water resistant wall and ceiling panels for bathrooms and kitchens
These plastic tiles are panels that are firmly attached and hold back water. That is why they are so useful in damp areas such as the bathroom. You can use them on your wall or ceiling in the bathroom, kitchen or just anywhere else in the house! The panels are easy to install. You also have these in different types. You have panels with a tongue and groove system, seamless panels or panels with a v-groove in it.
- Solid wall tiles with tongue and groove
These wall tiles are constructed from completely solid, UV-resistant plates and look nice and neat in the house. You can place them in three different ways, namely nailing, stapling and gluing. Later in the article we will explain exactly how to proceed.
- Large plastic wall tiles
These are wall tiles that are just a size bigger than the regular plastic tiles. This way you hardly see any joints and the wall is actually a whole. This is especially nice if you want to go for a concrete look, because joints do not make sense. They are also very easy to attach, because the panels are so large and you can therefore cover almost the entire wall with just one panel.
You can attach plastic tiles in these ways
You can attach the plastic wall tiles in different ways. It differs per wall tile and which type you have chosen. In general, you can attach it in these three ways, namely nailing, stapling or gluing. We explain how you can do this:
To prevent the panels from working, first let them acclimatize for 48 hours in the room where you will be using them. If they have been in a cold room and you put them in 20 degrees in one go, then they will expand a bit and you can better prevent that!
The tiles can be glued over other tiles or on another flat back wall. You can also simply apply the tiles with mounting glue. Do not glue the entire wall first, but do this per tile, so that the glue does not dry!
Just like with normal tiling, you first ensure a level line when mounting, after which you work in columns from right to left. The reason that you work from right to left is because the flange is at the back of the plastic wall tiles and you always hook the next panel into it. This is somewhat the same idea as with laminate. Are there any corners, edges or pipes in the way? Then you can easily saw the tiles with an ordinary saw.
In addition to gluing, you could also nail the tiles to the wall. This works slightly differently. You cannot do this on a flat surface. Before you start placing the tiles in this method, make some wooden slats on the wall. After that it is actually very simple. Grab a hammer and small nails and nail the plastic wall tiles to the slats. The nail should of course not be visible and that is why you hit it on the flange on the wall tile. The next tile just comes over here, so you won’t see it anymore.
This method works almost the same as nailing. For this you also make some strips on the wall. Instead of hitting nails, you work with a staple gun. You also shoot these staples through the flange of the wall tiles, so that you do not see them. The advantage of this method is that the surface does not necessarily have to be flat. Is the surface just flat? Then gluing remains the easiest method.
There are also plastic wall tiles that are self-adhesive. You don’t really need anything for this and you can simply stick it on the wall without mounting glue!
In this way you finish the tiles
But how do you finish the tiles in a beautiful and easy way? There are also different methods for this. There is a difference whether you want to cover the entire wall with the plastic wall tiles or if you only want to do a part of the wall. We will tell you how best to do this.
If you are only going to tile part of the wall with the plastic tiles, then you finish the top and bottom and the sides with special profiles. These are simply available at a hardware store and you have them in all different types. Are you going around a corner? Then it is important to apply a profile in the corner as well. In addition, you can also close the seams in the shower, for example in the bath, with a silicone adhesive, so that it is 100% waterproof! If you are going to tile the entire wall, you should also use the profiles, but only at the top and bottom and a special corner profile for the corners.
