Face mask is gaining ground in the Netherlands: from Wednesday mandatory in busy places in Amsterdam and Rotterdam

The local authorities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam will be obliged to wear masks in busy places from Wednesday, which will be clearly demarcated.

The measures are striking, because the Netherlands has so far opted for a corona approach without a mask, except on public transport. Just yesterday, the national crisis team decided not to introduce a national obligation.

According to the Dutch experts, there is too little scientific evidence for the usefulness of oral masks against Covid-19. They go against what their Belgian, French and American colleagues say, among other things. The national level did leave an opening for measures at the local level, which Amsterdam and Rotterdam immediately use.

Psychological effect

Both cities will introduce a mouth mask requirement from Wednesday in certain shopping streets and other busy places, from the age of 13. Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb mainly points to its psychological effect. “Mouth masks increase the urgency in some places.” In the first phase, he will mainly encourage the Rotterdammers to wear mouth masks in a playful way.

Both the experts and the mayors involved emphasize that keeping the golden rule of 1.5 meters away is still the most important weapon to prevent the spread of the corona virus.
