According to media reports, Facebook is working full steam ahead on an in-house smartwatch. “The Information” reported this first, citing four employees of the group. Exciting: the launch should be planned for 2022. While the smart watch should offer fitness and health functions and connections to the popular Instagram and WhatsApp apps – there will be one thing with the Fb smartwatch: a connection to your smartphone. But that won’t be necessary either, because the smartwatch should contain an independent cellular connection.

The planned Facebook smartwatch should be able to do that

With Facebook’s Smartwatch – of course – Facebook messages should be sent and received. The watch also collects health data from users and measures fitness activities. In addition, there should be practical connections to fitness equipment such as the Peloton fitness bike. In addition, the competition with Facebook friends should be possible.

The first Facebook smartwatch should run on Android. However, it is not yet known whether the smartwatch uses Google’s “Wear OS” or its own derivative. The media company could use its own operating system for later versions. Facebook is reportedly working on its own system for its devices.

Facebook is expanding its own hardware program

A smartwatch would mean expanding the company’s own hardware program. Facebook has already released the Portal Mini and Portal TV smart devices and a virtual reality headset with Oculus. In addition, the media giant, led by Mark Zuckerberg, has been testing augmented reality glasses since last year. Initially, however, it is not intended to become a commercial product.

You can buy these smartwatches from Samsung, Huawei and Apple for less than 250 euros

Smartwatches are wristwatches with additional functions. You can couple the smart timepieces with your smartphone and thus expand its functions considerably. For example, you can use a smartwatch to read and answer your e-mails, track sports activities and take calls.
