You can also send self-deleting messages, as you may already be familiar with from Whatsapp and other messengers, in Facebook Messenger. The message, whether text, image or other content, is then automatically deleted after a specified period of time. We’ll show you how to use this hidden feature in Facebook Messenger.
How to send self-deleting messages on Facebook
If you have never noticed this function before, it may be because you have not yet used a secret chat – this is the prerequisite for sending self-deleting messages.
In Facebook Messenger
enable secret chats
by first starting a new chat and – before you select the respective contact –
Tap the lock symbol at the top right.
In this way, you open a secret conversation that is end-to-end encrypted on all active devices. In order to send a self-deleting message, the following steps are necessary:
For you, the counter starts immediately after sending, but for the recipient only after they have read the message.
And finally, a well-intentioned piece of advice: Never use self-deleting messages for sensitive content, as the recipient can easily bypass the purpose of the function with a screenshot (and Facebook will not notify you in this case either).
