Fake vaccines seized in Mexico and Poland

The pharmaceutical company Pfizer has confirmed that suspicious doses of its anti-covid serum seized and sold for up to $ 1,000 each, were counterfeit.

The pharmaceutical company Pfizer has confirmed that suspicious doses of its anti-covid serum seized and sold for up to $ 1,000 each, were counterfeit.

(AFP) – Some 80 people were given false vaccines, apparently without effect on health but ineffective in the face of the virus, in a Mexican clinic. The information has just been unveiled by the Wall Street Journal. The vials were found in coolers meant to keep drinks cool and had fake lot numbers and expiration dates, Mexican officials said.

In Poland, a liquid confiscated as part of an investigation into the trafficking of fake vaccines turned out to be in fact a cosmetic product, probably an anti-wrinkle cream, said the Pfizer laboratory surprised by such “counterfeiting”.

“We are aware that in the current climate, favored by the ease and convenience of electronic commerce and the anonymity afforded by the internet, there is going to be an increase in fraud, counterfeiting and other illegal activities relating to vaccines and treatments for covid-19, “said a spokesperson for Pfizer on the channel ABC News.

“A perfect opportunity for criminals”

In February, the health authorities of the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon had warned against “clandestine” sales of “alleged covid vaccines” and called on the population not to buy them. In March, the World Health Organization (WHO) was also concerned that Pfizer “falsified” vaccines had been discovered in Mexico and that the product “may still be circulating in the region.”

But such a mishap has already been spotted in Italy or Belgium recently. No case has yet been reported in the Grand Duchy where 166,000 anti-covid doses have already been administered.

Pfizer performed tests on the vials and found that they did not contain the vaccine it developed with BioNTech. “We have a very limited supply, which will increase as we scale up and more companies enter the vaccine market. In the meantime, there is a perfect opportunity for the criminals, ”told the Wall Street Journal Pfizer’s Chief Safety Officer.

Mexico is also controlling a delivery of what is billed as 6,000 doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, seized last month on a private plane bound for Honduras, according to the newspaper.
