Fewer smokers and excessive drinkers in the year of corona

In the corona year 2020, the number of adult smokers decreased slightly compared to 2019. The number of excessive drinkers was also somewhat lower. The proportion of overweight and obese adults remained the same. Nice figures, but the government still thinks they are too high.

This is stated in the Health Survey / Lifestyle Monitor 2020 of the CBS, drawn up in collaboration with the RIVM and the Trimbos Institute. The measures concerning corona that applied last year do not show any noticeable effects in the figures. And that while many sat at home a bit lazy, balding or depressed. But the exact consequences of people’s lifestyles in the first year of corona are still being investigated further.

Number of smokers decreased slightly

Last year, 20 percent of adults indicated that they sometimes smoked, compared to 22 percent in 2019. About 15 percent were daily smokers, just as many as the year before. Of the adults, 46 percent said they had never smoked, while 34 percent said they had previously smoked. That was also the case in 2019. The number of non-smokers who were exposed to smoke in the area, but not every day, decreased from 20 percent in 2019 to 16 percent last year.

In 2020, 44 percent of adults met the Health Council’s alcohol guideline: no drinking, or no more than one glass a day. In 2019 this was still 41.5 percent. Of those over 18, 7 percent were excessive drinkers. Then it concerns more than 21 glasses for men or 14 glasses for women per week. That is a slight decrease compared to 2019 (8.5 percent).

Overweight in the year of corona

In 2020, half of the adults were overweight; 13.9 percent were seriously overweight or obese. This was virtually the same in 2019. Of the 4- to 18-year-olds, 14.7 percent were overweight and 2.5 percent obese. Here too, this was virtually unchanged compared to 2019. The outcome seems striking: after all, the possibilities for sports were greatly reduced in the year of corona. The shares of smokers, excessive and heavy drinkers, and people with overweight and obesity were still well above the targets set last year. National Prevention Agreement by 2040. The government wants to use this to reduce smoking and problematic alcohol consumption among adults to 5 percent by 2040. Overweight must be reduced to 38 percent of the over-18s, obesity to 7.1 percent. For young people under the age of 18, the Prevention Agreement must reduce obesity to 9.1 percent and obesity to 2.3 percent.
