On January 19, 2021, it was decided that the mask requirement to contain the coronavirus will be tightened. This means that medical masks are mandatory nationwide when shopping and on public transport. The so-called community masks are no longer sufficient. They are now being replaced by FFP2 masks or surgical masks. The only exception to this rule is the state of Bavaria. The FFP2 mask requirement has been in place there since January 18, 2021. Surgical masks are not permitted – at least in public transport and when shopping.

How do you recognize medical masks

As part of the tightened mask requirement, only medical masks may be worn. In addition to the FFP2 masks, this also includes the so-called OP masks. In order to meet the protection requirements for masks, FFP2 masks must meet the requirements of the European standard EN 149: 2001 + A1: 2009 and surgical masks must meet the requirements of the standard EN 14683: 2019-10. Only then do they receive the CE mark (important: FFP2 masks must be followed by a four-digit number), which means you can recognize them as medical masks. If this label is missing, you should stay away from it! The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices provides further information and recommendations on face masks.

Medical masks on sale

Because FFP2 masks and surgical masks are single-use products, they should not be used multiple times. However, since medical masks are significantly more expensive than reusable community masks in the long run, this can quickly become quite expensive. That is why we looked for shops where FFP2 masks and surgical masks are currently on sale.
