Football: FIFA is experimenting with “concussion swap” at World Cup clubs

2.17 pm: Already at the upcoming World Cup for clubs in Qatar, an extra substitution option is being tested in case it is suspected that a football player has suffered a concussion. The global federation FIFA has given permission for this. The World Cup for the continental club champions will be held from 1 to 11 February in Qatar, which will also host the global final round for countries at the end of 2022.

Last month, the international rules committee IFAB decided that testing can be done with extra substitutions in the event of a (possible) concussion. Experts have been pushing for such a measure for some time. Often, knocked-out players are patched up again after head injuries and continue the match anyway. Sometimes a minor or severe concussion is then diagnosed later.

At the World Cup for clubs, clubs are allowed to substitute a maximum of one extra player per match if a concussion is suspected. The trainers are allowed to make five regular changes per match, two more than usual. Because of the corona problems, the IFAB also gave permission last year to temporarily increase the number of exchange options from three to five.

On behalf of Europe Bayern Munich, the winner of the Champions League, is participating in the World Cup for clubs.

A large part of the selection and staff tested positive for the corona virus at the beginning of this week. Those involved immediately went into isolation. A second round of testing on Thursday revealed even more infections. The club then decided to close the Bodymoor Heath training complex.

11.28 am: The American tennis player Sofia Kenin has reached the third round of the WTA tournament in Abu Dhabi due to a statement by the Belgian Kirsten Flipkens. Flipkens sustained an ankle injury in the final phase of the second set.

Football: Duel Go Ahead Eagles moved due to corona

10.32 am: The KNVB has postponed the match in the Kitchen Champion Division between Go Ahead Eagles and TOP Oss for two days. The clubs would meet on Friday evening in the Adelaarshorst in Deventer, but at the request of Go Ahead, the game has been postponed to Sunday evening, kick-off at 8.15 pm. The club from Deventer currently has insufficient match-fit players, as a result of a considerable corona wave within the selection.

Due to corona cases and injuries, trainer Kees van Wonderen has only ten field players from the A-selection at his disposal and one keeper of the reserves. After consultation between the club doctor and the union doctor of the KNVB, the union decided to move the match against TOP Oss to Sunday.

Earlier in the week, Van Wonderen missed ten players against Young PSV as a result of corona infections. With many young talents in the team, Go Ahead Eagles, the number 7 in the rankings, managed to win on Tuesday-evening (3-2).

“We just played” back then, without grumbling, “says general manager Jan Willem van Dop. “Usually with players who have not played a full game for months, because practice matches are not allowed. In view of injuries, it was irresponsible to play again three days later. Especially now that we do not have any exchange options. ”

Van Dop is pleased that both the KNVB and TOP Oss have shown understanding. „For the progress of the competition, it has been decided to still play the game in this round, but on Sunday. Those two days already make a big difference. I therefore think that you can speak of a happy medium. ”
