Firefox 98.0.1: Browser update due to Ukraine war

Mozilla has released Firefox 98.0.1. This browser update is in response to the Russian attack on Ukraine.

Mozilla has released a small update for Firefox. It brings exactly two innovations related to the Russian attack on Ukraine. According to the release notes for Firefox 98.0.1, Mozilla has removed two Russian websites from its browser. Mozilla writes:

“Yandex and Mail.ru have been removed as optional search providers from the dropdown search menu in Firefox.

If you previously installed a customized version of Firefox with Yandex or Mail.ru offered through partner sales channels, this version removes those customizations, including add-ons and default bookmarks. If applicable, your browser will be reset to the default settings as offered by Mozilla. All other versions of Firefox are unaffected by this change.”

Yandex and mail.ru

If Yandu was previously selected as the default search engine, it will be replaced by Google. Yandex is a search engine and web portal. Mail.ru, on the other hand, makes various internet offers available, for example a mail client and a search engine.

In other words, the majority of Firefox users don’t even notice this change. Firefox 98.0.1 does not bring new functions and not even bug fixes or security updates.
