Design and dimensions: large grille and standard LED headlights

The rejuvenation of the Focus is already recognizable from the outside by the significantly larger radiator grille, which now incorporates the trademark. The headlights have become narrower and come with LED technology as standard. Matrix LED headlights can also be ordered as an option. The fog lights move into the main headlights and make room for a completely new front apron design that depends on the equipment.

Price list: The facelifted Focus costs from 23,600 euros, the sporty ST starts at 37,650 euros.

The dimensions have not changed. In terms of length, the fresh focus has only gained around five millimeters and now measures almost 4.4 meters, the width remains at 1.82 meters. The individual equipment variants differ slightly in terms of height. The base measures around 1.45 meters to the edge of the roof, the slightly jacked “Active” version comes to 1.48 meters. If you like it smarter, you can opt for the ST-Line with a total height of 1.44 meters – at the tournament there is a little more room in all equipment lines.

Lush trunk volume in focus

The facelift was also able to gain a bit of space in the cargo area – at least up to the second row of seats. The compact five-door swallows around 17 liters more with 392 liters, in the larger station wagon it is even 27 liters more. If you put the back seat down, the Focus swallows up to 1354 liters, and up to 1653 liters fit into the trunk at the tournament.

Dimensions of Ford Focus:

• Length: 4382-4397mm
• Width: 1825-1844 mm (1979 mm including exterior mirrors)
• Height: 1440-1482mm
• Wheelbase: 2700mm
• Trunk volume: 392-1354 liters

Dimensions of the Focus Tournament:

• Length: 4672-4693mm
• Width: 1825-1844 mm (1979 mm including exterior mirrors)
• Height: 1459-1504mm
• Wheelbase: 2700mm
• Trunk volume: 635-1653 liters

Interior: The operating system comes from the Mach-E

When looking into the interior, the huge, horizontal 13.2-inch screen (at least 33.5 centimeters) is particularly noticeable, via which the driver can now access the new Sync4 operating system. The infotainment is already known from the Mustang Mach-E. Cloud-based navigation, networked voice control and a more intuitive user interface are just as much part of this as the control option for the air conditioning. As a result, the revised cockpit appears much slimmer and tidier.

Huge: the 13.2-inch screen with the Sync4 operating system dominates the Focus cockpit.

The Focus can be ordered in four trim levels. The “Cool & Connect” equipment is the entry point, followed by the “Titanium” equipment. For outdoor fans, the Cologne company offers the slightly higher “Active” line, and those who like it sportier can order the flatter “ST line”. Apart from the basic version, “X” and “Vignale” upgrades can be ordered in addition to the packages.

Engines: EcoBoost petrol engines also available as a mild hybrid

When it comes to engines, Ford offers the 1-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost in three power levels and a 1.5 diesel for the Focus. The entry-level petrol engine is powered by 100 hp (74 kW), and a maximum of 170 Nm of torque is transmitted to the road. On request, the petrol engine is also available as a mild hybrid with a 48-volt electrical system. This means that up to 155 hp and 190 Nm are possible. With the diesel, 120 hp and up to 300 Nm tear at the drive shafts. With all engines, the power is passed on to the front wheels; the Focus does not have all-wheel drive.

Ford has also provided a sharper ST version. The Sport Focus is fueled by a 2.3 liter heart, 280 hp are transmitted to the front wheels. Here, too, deright Customer can choose between a manual gearbox and the automatic. A bit of a pity: The original top model Focus RS with 350 hp and all-wheel drive was discontinued with the fourth generation in 2018. (Calculate maintenance costs? To the car insurance comparison)

Used car test: The Focus also cuts a fine figure when used

The Ford Focus tournament is one of the favorites of many sales representatives and fleet managers. The compact station wagon packs a punch and packs a punch without costing a fortune to purchase and maintain. This test car, with its averagely thirsty 1.0 liter EcoBosst turbocharged petrol engine with 125 hp, is a good example. With the fourth generation of the Focus, Ford switched from the controversial oil-bath timing belt to a timing chain, but initially saved hybrid technology.
Ford Focus Active Tournament 1.0 Ecoboost

The Ford Focus Tournament scores as a pleasant all-rounder without premium airs and graces. There is a lot of modern technology used at good prices.

According to the list, this sparsely equipped Focus Active tournament cost almost 30,000 euros new. Now, with 64,589 kilometers on the clock, it would be available for 16,480 euros. This drop in price can hardly be explained by defects: Without dents and major scratches, the specimen looks like many a year-old car. The chassis is also pleasantly firm.

Princely space and good long-term quality

For a compact station wagon, the Focus is a good load master. With 635 to 1653 liters, the Cologne-based company would be in a good position even in the middle class. Its variable boot floor ensures a pleasant plus in storage options. And when it comes to the space available for passengers, the Focus tournament does not need to hide from the Audi A4 and co. The tautly upholstered standard seats are not a marvel of ergonomics, but they still fit even 1.90 meter guys in long-distance use. And nothing pinches on the back seat either.

Used Ford Focus with warranty

And the durability is also convincing. Nothing rattles or chirps on board, even after a good one and a half orbits around the world. It only gets tight when it comes to the trailer load: 1000 kilograms (690 kilograms unbraked) are very tight. Car and trailer drivers would be advised anyway to the 1.5 liter turbo diesel, which scores with its torque plus and is also available at popular prices as a company car that has been returned. The entire used car test can be found here.

Previous generation with a mixed TÜV record

At TÜV, the compact shows some weaknesses. A focus: the turbocharger of the 1.6-liter diesel. The camshaft adjustment of the TI-VCT hooked, as well as the start-stop systems. The ADAC reports an unusually large number of marten-affine cooling water hoses. The vulnerable chassis, unstable exhaust systems; the problems with the lighting can be solved with a little maintenance and care. After intensive review, the Focus can still be an insider tip. The excellent brakes deserve special praise.
