Ford Mondeo Tournament (5th generation): Used car test

The service trip ended after 29 years. On April 4, 2022, the last European Ford Mondeo ran in Spain Valencia by band. There will probably only be a successor to the fifth generation for the Chinese market. However, private prospects for the XL middle class need not despair. The fifth, introduced in 2015, is used Mondeo-Generation galore.

And as a leasing return with a typical history of frequent drivers, it is even remarkably cheap. Our test vehicle from Autohus in Bockel (near Bremen) is just such a case. It drives as a station wagon variant competitionwith richer titaniumequipment, some additional extras and a powerful 2.0 liter TDCi engine.

According to the Schwacke database, the Ford cost 44,410 euros new in exactly this configuration in May 2017. Five years and 158,821 kilometers later, only 15,680 euros would be due. What explains the sharp fall in value compared to the list price? Generally became the Mondeo often pushed into the fleet customer market at a discount of 20 percent or more. And the kilometer marathon that followed left its mark on the body, even if the workmanship as a whole deserves the title “experienced”.

Its name said it all: the Mondeo was intended to be a world car.

The Aston Martin-inspired snout of our test car bears a number of stone chips and a palm-sized dented right wheel arch, which testifies to fast motorway stages and a pinch of carelessness. The brake discs have clear signs of wear, the fundamentally attractive panoramic glass roof unfortunately completely fails to function.

On the other hand, there is nothing to criticize about the chassis of our long-distance runner from the Autohaus, which unfortunately is not quite as skilfully tuned as in the previous generations. Rumble noises are not an issue.

Ford Mondeo used: Which engine is recommended?

Long distances were always the domain of the 4.87 meter long ford. His 180th hp strong Euro 6 turbo diesel comes from PPE and pleases with a maximum of 400 Newton meters of torque and pleasant manners. Beware the 1500 and 1600 Duratorq diesels at 115 and 120 respectively hp!

In view of the stately body and the lavish weight, they quickly seem overwhelmed. The same applies to the one-liter Eco Boost petrol engine with 125 hp. The hybrid variant with 187 hp (in the competition away facelift available in spring 2019) does not play a major role on the used market.

The Vignale versions, which are a good 5000 euros more expensive, look really classy. But even so, plenty of space and softly padded seats flatter the passengers. The trunk volume of the direct predecessor was better, 500 to 1605 liters are still a word.

How wide the cross of the Mondeo actually is, underlines its enormous possible payload of 721 kilograms. In an emergency, thanks to its trailer hitch (which was once subject to a surcharge), it can also handle trailers weighing up to 1800 kilograms (750 kilograms unbraked).

The Titanium variant comes with a good selection of assistants

The standard assistants are also good titanium-Variant. Thanks to the combination of LED headlights, drowsiness detection, a mediocre accurate traffic sign scanner and somewhat hasty lane departure warning and high beam assistants, driving is safer. At least if you find the way. Because the Sync 3 navigation infotainment is sluggish, unnecessarily complicated to use and hardly readable in sunlight.

Still gives the last Mondeo all in all a decent performance. So much unpretentious transport talent at manageable prices has become quite rare.
