Formula 1: Alpha Tauri: New B-Red Bull in dark blue

New B-Red Bull in dark blue

Alpha Tauri today unveiled the new racer for 2021: The Formula 1 vehicle will be painted blue instead of white in 2021.

Noh McLaren on Monday, Alpha Tauri also dropped the covers of the little Red Bull today via Youtube. The new Alpha Tauri-Honda AT02 comes in dark blue.
That is positive, because last year the vehicles from Alfa Romeo, Williams and Alpha Tauri were often difficult to tell apart – because all three had a white base coat.

Team boss sets an ambitious goal

Alpha Tauri’s goal for the 2021 season is ambitious: They want to be at the top of the midfield! “In 2020 Alpha Tauri was a midfield team. We fought against teams like McLaren, Renault and Racing Point, ”says team boss Franz Tost. “But in 2021 we want to be consistently at the top of the midfield. To do that, we have to get our reliability problems under control and finish every race on the points. ”

Changes to the Alpha Tauri AT02

Many changes to the new AT02 are due to the new rules – such as the incision in the underbody in front of the rear wheels. In addition, however, technology director Jody Egginton reveals: “The work that we have put into developing our 2021 car goes far beyond just adapting it to the rule changes. We have changed almost all aerodynamic surfaces and also further developed and re-integrated large parts of the car. “

Also interesting: Alpha Tauri buys the previous year’s wheel suspensions as well as the rear axle, steering and hydraulics from its big brother Red Bull. The regulations would allow the Italians to switch from the 2019 Red Bull suspension to the 2020 suspension in 2021. But you do without it. Instead, the new front suspension, including the new nose, was designed in Faenza. The two available development tokens were also used for this.

Alpha Tauri again with victory driver

Alpha Tauri has repositioned itself in terms of driving. Daniil Kvyat had to leave the team, but Yuki Tsunoda is a talented Japanese Formula 2 driver (third place in 2020), who is also the youngest driver in the field at the age of 20. He wants to “learn quickly” and, in the long term, “be the first Japanese driver to win a Formula 1 race”.

Franz Tost even admits that the young talent made mistakes in his debut season. “We expect his learning curve to be pretty steep, so he should be able to perform well quickly,” said the team principal. “Of course he will have a few accidents, that’s part of the development process, but what is very special about him is the control of the car, his strength when braking and his speed in fast corners.”
Pierre Gasly, however, remains with the former Toro Rosso team. He has been on the road for the team from Faenza, Italy, since 2017 – with a short break at Red Bull. Of the 52 races, he won one: the 2020 Italian GP in Monza. Curious: For the first time since 1994 (!) The racing team is starting the new season with a racing winner! At that time Michele Alboreto was on the road for the team that was still called Minardi.

Tost thinks Gasly is big: “I think Pierre is one of the strongest drivers in Formula 1 at the moment,” says the Austrian. “Pierre’s good technical understanding enables him to get the most out of the car. He knows how to win a race and if we give him a competitive car then I expect he will be very successful this season. ”

Red Bull took over the team in 2006 and has been called Alpha Tauri since 2020 – named after the Red Bull Group’s fashion label.
