Hülkenberg returns!

Now it’s official: Nico Hülkenberg celebrates his Formula 1 comeback and replaces Sergio Pérez at the Great Britain GP. Everything about the return of the German.

NAfter only three races away, Nico Hülkenberg is back in Formula 1: He replaces Sergio Pérez, who suffers from the corona virus, at the British GP at the weekend. Hülkenberg was already seen in the paddock today – in pink team clothes. Also means: His corona test must have been negative. That was the only problem, as the German confirmed yesterday evening.

The night was short for Hülkenberg: In addition to paperwork such as a super license and FIA notification, a seat also had to be adjusted. In the morning he was already 45 minutes in the simulator.

In the meantime, the other teams have also agreed to his comeback and registration by Racing Point. Hülkenberg will probably also contest the second Silverstone race for Racing Point next week.

Hülkenberg in an official press release from the team: “I was on my way to the Nürburgring for a different racing project when the call from Otmar came. That was less than 24 hours ago, so it feels a bit surreal to me now, but I like a good challenge, and this is certainly one. It is obviously a difficult situation for Racing Point and Checo. He is a buddy of mine, an old teammate, and I wish him a speedy recovery. I will step in and try to do the best I can for the team! ”

It is the third time for the German after 2012 and after 2014 to 2016 that he will be competing in Formula 1 for the racing team from Silverstone. So far he has completed 79 races for the team, only Sergio Pérez (124) and Adrian Sutil (109) have driven more for Racing Point and the predecessor teams.

Racing Point has never had such a good vehicle. This also means that Hülkenberg may no longer get a better chance of getting rid of the record for most Formula 1 races on the podium.

It is also a good chance for the 32-year-old to apply for a permanent Formula 1 comeback in 2021. Chances are given to him at Alfa Romeo and Haas.

As a replacement for Pérez, a number of other drivers had also offered themselves openly on Racing Point’s Twitter channel, including Jenson Button, Kamui Kobayashi and Alexander Rossi. Button joked: “Did you forget my number?”
