Rast: “Vettel was a high-flyer”
DTM triple champion René Rast stands behind Vettel: “Don’t think that he has forgotten how to drive”
Rast to AUTO BILD Motorsport: “I already drove against him in kart racing up to Formula BMW. It started in the Bambini class in 1996 or something, went through the juniors to Formula BMW. So I accompanied him all the way up to then. There you have already seen that he is a natural and that he was a bit ahead of the others. “
René Rast and Sebastian Vettel in Formula BMW times
The three-time DTM champion is the celebrated star today, while Vettel had to take a lot of criticism. But Rast puts this into perspective: “Back then I didn’t win many races against him in karting and none at all in Formula BMW – he won 18 out of 20 races. Then he continued on his way to Formula 1, where he was the new hope and then implemented it. He dominated Formula 1 for years. That was also what I knew about him from karting and the formula era. That he was simply the high-flyer. ”
Rast therefore does not believe that Vettel has forgotten how to drive: “He’s having a difficult time now, but I don’t think it’s because of his talent. Rather, I think these are all things that we cannot evaluate that are in the background happen.”
Formula 1 will be in Bahrain this weekend (Sunday, 3:10 p.m.).
