Team boss Günther Steiner’s men are overjoyed on Saturday: “Two Haas in Q3, for the first time since 2019. It’s fantastic for the whole team,” said the Austrian after eighth and tenth place for Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher.
For the young German, it is the first Q3 entry of his career in his second year in Formula 1. But until then it’s hard work on Saturday, especially for the mechanics: “It was a nerve-wracking day because in the third practice session Mick had a problem with his rear wheel brakes,” explains Steiner. Large flames are licking up from the brake drums, the team has to extinguish the car in the pits and then start a race against time.

“The guys worked hard to get the car ready for qualifying. They just about made it, but we really didn’t have a minute to waste,” reveals Steiner.
More than just eaten: The brake and the rear wing on the Haas
Schumacher also remains cool afterwards – and then has the luck of the capable: Actually, the son of record world champion Michael Schumacher fails eleventh at the Q3 hurdle, but then McLaren driver Lando Norris is his fastest time because of exceeding the track limits in the curve twelve revoked. The Brit slips out of the top 10 and Schumacher moves up.
“Making it into Q3, even though I couldn’t even drive in third practice and that messed up our processes, is definitely great and a great achievement from everyone in the team. They did a great job and I’m very grateful to them for that “, praises Schumi Jr. “Of course I’m very happy with the result. Although it didn’t look like we had the pace at first, we did well.”

Schumacher had already started in Imola in tenth place, but back then it was the result of the sprint race and not qualifying. But the race didn’t go according to plan. On Sunday it should finally work with the first F1 points. “Of course I hope so,” reveals Schumacher. “We’re starting tenth, so we’re already in the points. Now it’s about staying inside or maybe even making up a few places.”
Good things for the race and the premiere points: Mick Schumacher
The course gives the Haas pilot hope: “Barcelona was always quite eventful, because because it’s so difficult to overtake, people risk a lot,” says Schumacher. And the fact that he is very familiar with the current specification of the car (the team only brings updates for the French GP; ed.) gives him courage: “The fact that we don’t have any updates here and everyone else does, and still when we’re right in the middle of it, that’s a good feeling,” says the 24-year-old happily.
