Formula 1: Vettel podium: Team boss Binotto is happy for Vettel

Team boss Binotto is happy for Vettel

Sebastian Vettel brings his career at Ferrari to a conciliatory conclusion with a podium. Words of praise from team boss Mattia Binotto.

E.It’s no secret that Sebastian Vettel and Scuderia Ferrari no longer look at each other through rose-colored glasses – at least since it became known in May that Vettel’s contract for 2021 will not be extended. The third place for the German at the Turkish GP was all the more surprising, but also more liberating.

There were also words of praise from team boss Mattia Binotto: “I am particularly pleased that Sebastian made it into the top 3. He drove a very strong race and his start was fantastic. ”Binotto himself did not follow the race from the command post, but worked at the factory on a better Ferrari future from 2021.

For Vettel it was the 55th podium for Ferrari. This is an important number because only four driver-team combinations in F1 history were able to get more podiums: Michael Schumacher was on the podium 116 times for Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton 114 times for Mercedes, Vettel 65 times for Red Bull and Alain Prost for McLaren 63 times.

Team-mate Charles Leclerc also praised Vettel: “I congratulate Seb, who scored his first top 3 result this season. I’m happy that in the end he was able to show what he is capable of on the track. It was generally a very difficult year for him and he deserves the podium. ”
Another important statistic: Ferrari scored 27 points in Turkey – more than any other team. “As a team, we did a good job overall, especially with the strategy. We made bold decisions at the right time, ”explains Binotto. “We did a lot of hard work on Sunday night on the track and at the Maranello plant to find out why we didn’t bring the tires into the work window. And this effort paid off, as you can see on the rain tires as well as on the intermediates. ”
Good for Ferrari: At least sixth in the table should now be almost certain for the Italians. Alpha Tauri is 49 points behind. Renault is only six points ahead of Ferrari, McLaren is 19 points ahead of them, Racing Point 25. So it may even be third place in the constructors’ championship for Ferrari.
Binotto is therefore not entirely satisfied: “Charles was very fast for long stretches of the race. Without his start and the slide on the last lap of the race, he would have ended up in second place, ”the 51-year-old criticized the young Monegasque. As always, he is self-critical, berating himself on the pit radio: “I drove a sh … race.”
