After a two-year Corona break, Gamescom in Cologne will open its doors again this year. From August 23rd to 28th, 2022, the games and entertainment fair will take place in the Rhine metropolis.
Big publishers cancel
In the past few days, however, some major publishers have canceled their participation in the fair – including the two console manufacturers Sony and Nintendo. When asked by Netzwelt colleagues, the companies confirmed that they would not be taking part in Gamescom this year. However, the two companies did not give reasons. As Gameswirtschaft reports, in addition to Sony and Nintendo, Activision Blizzard, Wargaming and Take-Two Interactive have also canceled their participation.
Microsoft and smaller local businesses
It is unclear why the five large companies will not be part of the trade fair restart. During the pandemic, many publishers may have found they can also reach their fans through their own channels. The cancellation of the trade fair also saves costs. Fans are now hoping for a strong presence from Microsoft and Xbox. Sony and Nintendo are also leaving the stage to indie studios and smaller publishers such as Sega, THQ Nordic, Bandai Namco or Deep Silver, who have already confirmed their participation.
