Gaming fair E3 2022 completely cancelled

Even the E3 emergency solution of a digital event should not exist this year. But organizers give hope for 2023.

This year’s gaming fair E3 will probably be canceled. The information came from Will Powers, a PR rep for gaming peripherals maker Razer, who tweeted that he received an email confirming the cancellation, The Verge also reports.

The plan was to hold the video game fair with an audience again this year – in January 2022, however, this plan was converted into a purely online event due to the pandemic. As it now appears, however, the event will be canceled completely.

Concerns about the future of E3 are growing

The corona pandemic continues to make it difficult for organizers to organize trade fairs with an audience, as these are currently simply unattractive. Just last week, several video game industry professionals reported that they had tested positive for COVID-19 after attending the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Adding to the pandemic concerns, a growing number of major publishers are pulling out of E3 and instead hosting their own online events such as Nintendo’s Direct Showcases, EA Play Live and Sony’s State of Play. So there is also great concern that E3 could soon not take place at all.

E3 2023 is set to take place

The cancellation of this year’s E3 reinforces those concerns. Despite the negative reports, the ESA reported:

“E3 will return in 2023 with a reinvigorated exhibit celebrating new and exciting video games and industry innovations.”

E3 2023 is expected to be both an online and face-to-face event.
