The news hit like a bomb. The governing coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP has agreed to severely restrict the funding of electric cars and plug-in hybrids from the beginning of 2023. Does this affect the GHG Premium and may I have to rush to get money before the pots are empty and there may be no more payouts?
The premium for the greenhouse gas quota is administered by the Federal Environment Agency, but has nothing to do with state subsidies for electrified vehicles. In any case, only those who drive a purely electric car can apply for the GHG premium, as plug-in hybrids are excluded from the subsidies. The GHG quota was introduced in order to involve the petroleum industry more in environmental protection than before.

The oil industry pays for the GHG quota, not the state
For years this has been done indirectly by adding biofuels to petrol and diesel. The end customer has been benefiting since 2022. The owner of an electric car can make financial use of the CO2 savings of his electric vehicle. If you register your electric vehicle with the Federal Environment Agency, you can currently pocket 250 to almost 500 euros. According to the current status, this will not change in the coming years, because the mineral oil industry must continue to expand its contribution to environmental protection in the future.
Since the available pots will be filled by the petrochemical industry, it is not important whether and how much the government will subsidize electric cars in the coming years, and whether government subsidies might end entirely by the mid-2020s. Therefore, there is no need to rush to get the GHG premium for the current year 2022.

Since the processing of applications at the Federal Environment Agency is significantly delayed, you should apply for the GHG premium as soon as possible after registering your own electric car, electric scooter or installing a public charging station.
In the coming year, the bonus for the greenhouse gas quota can then be applied for again for the year 2023. The exact amount has not yet been determined; however, it can currently be assumed that this will be at the level of 250 to 400 euros or even higher.

The terms of the GHG Premium are not complicated
The payment of future bonuses is not subject to any special conditions. Simply register your own electric car with the service provider online, upload the relevant vehicle data and collect the bonus after a few weeks of processing time.
It is completely unimportant how many kilometers you drive in your e-car in the year, when you register the vehicle in the year or where you charge it every day. The electricity mix is also irrelevant. You can charge the vehicle at the fast charging station with 100 percent green electricity or at home with a variable electricity mix.
