Update 8/9: The reason for the disruption
PC-WELT asked Web.de and GMX about the reason for the disruption. Web.de’s press office replied immediately:
“Yesterday morning, between 8:30 and 10:00 a.m., some users were temporarily restricted when logging into their Web.de and GMX e-mail accounts. Access via the browser was affected and retrieving e-mails via IMAP or POP3.
It was possible to receive and send e-mails via the Web.de and GMX mail apps on iOS and Android at any time without restrictions.
The reason for the restrictions was an update in parts of our security systems, which use various parameters to check the authenticity of login requests. Immediately after the update in the morning, these systems reacted particularly ‘strictly’ and in some cases blocked legitimate login attempts.
The systems were fine-tuned accordingly over the course of the day. In the meantime, there could still be occasional restrictions when logging in. Therefore, we only removed the notice on the support pages in the afternoon.
