On Sunday we can follow the presentation of the Golden Globes in the United States. Normally the Oscars are awarded tonight, but they have been delayed by two months due to the corona crisis. Which films are the most likely to win?
When the corona virus swept the West in March last year, cinemas around the world closed. To give films a fair shot at an Oscar, the Academy adjusted the timing of the awards. Film companies also postponed the biggest movie releases of the year for several weeks. Today it is finally time to kick off the movie award season. Tonight’s Golden Globes will actually replace the delayed Oscars awards.
The winners of the evening are expected to be mainly productions of the streaming services Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Best Motion Picture – Drama
The category that, according to observers, also gives the most hints for the preference of the Oscars has five nominations. Nominated are The Father, Mank, Nomadland, Promising Young Women and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Here the overweight of Netflix in this movie season quickly becomes clear. David Fincher’s limp and Aaron Sorkin’s The Trail of the Chicago 7 are carried by the streaming platform. Together they are good for about 11 nominations. Netflix has a total of 22 nominations with its films, which makes it by far at the top.
Most connoisseurs suspect that Nomadland or Chicago 7 will make it. Aaron Sorkin’s expertise and strong style could potentially tilt the nomination in Chicago 7’s favor. Chloé Zhao’s more muted Nomadland might be just a little less impressive.
Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
In this category the films Borat Subsequent Movie Film, Hamilton, Music, Palm Springs and The Prom have been nominated.
Amazon Prime Video ‘s new Borat film in particular, a comedy and political satire with Oscar allure, has a realistic chance of winning the prize. But the romantic comedy Palm Springs with Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti is also a favorite of many film critics.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture
Although Anthony Hopkins showed a masterful performance in The Father and has never won a Globe, most expect the award to go to Chadwick Boseman.
Boseman died unexpectedly at his home in Los Angeles on August 28, 2020. His role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a drama film about blues singer Ma Rainey, will be his last appearance on the silver screen. The film is also a Netflix production.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture
The prize for the best female actor is expected to be an exciting competition between Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman) and Frances McDormand (Nomadland).
The British Mulligan is a new face in Hollywood and could be the chosen candidate according to observers. As a result, she would also have a good chance of an Oscar.
