The winners of Europe’s most coveted car award have been announced! Readers and jurors from AUTO BILD and BILD am SONNTAG have chosen the best cars this year. A total of twelve golden steering wheels were awarded in the following categories: SMALL & COMPACT CARS, SMALL & COMPACT CARS ELECTRIC, SUV, SUV ELECTRIC, MEDIUM AND UPPER CLASS, MEDIUM AND UPPER CLASS ELECTRIC, SPORTS CARS, VANS / FAMILY STEERING WHEEL, BEST CAR, BEST INNOVATION TO EUR 25,000, BEST CAR OF THE YEAR TO 25,000 EURO. The award ceremony took place at a gala with high-ranking representatives and celebrities from the automotive industry, media and politics in the Axel Springer House in Berlin. The event was moderated by Barbara Schöneberger.

This is how the election for the Golden Steering Wheel 2021 went
In the eight vehicle classes, the winners were determined in three phases: In phase 1, the editorial staff selected the candidates for election in advance. The readers of AUTO BILD and BILD am SONNTAG then chose their top 3 in the eight vehicle classes in the second phase. The three models with the most votes in each of the eight classes qualified for the finals at the DEKRA Lausitzring in early October. On the test track, a jury of experts – consisting of proven auto experts (editors-in-chief, car designers, car-loving celebrities, technicians, digital experts, racing drivers and frequent drivers) – examined all candidates according to criteria based on the AUTO BILD test scheme. The allocation of points was monitored by a notary on site. Finally, the jury results were merged and the cars with the highest number of points in each class are the winners of the Golden Steering Wheel 2021.
In addition to gold in the eight vehicle classes, we are awarding a gold steering wheel for the best innovation of the year. You also voted here. The three innovations with the most votes were presented to an expert jury, which then decided on the winner. The choice of the most beautiful car is purely a reader’s choice. All models presented were available for selection. The last two Golden Steering Wheels are ultimately about the best cars for the money. Which candidate has the best price-performance ratio up to 25,000 and up to 35,000 euros? The decision about these two golden steering wheels was in the hands of the AUTO BILD editorial team. Our judgment is based on driving impressions, basic price, basic equipment, guarantees and surcharge policy.
