Google closes another 11 holes in Chrome

Google has released another security update for Chrome. It fixes 11 browser vulnerabilities. Other browser manufacturers have already responded.

The September 14 update to Chrome 105.0.5195.125/126/127 for Windows (105.0.5195.125 for macOS and Linux) fixes 11 vulnerabilities in Google Browser. Just last week, Google closed a 0-day vulnerability in Chrome. Several manufacturers of other Chromium-based browsers quickly followed suit and provided updates on the same day. These are Brave and Vivaldi so far. While Opera has also released a new version, it is still lagging behind. Microsoft has announced an Edge update.
In the Chrome Release Blog, Prudhvikumar Bommana lists the seven vulnerabilities that were discovered by external researchers and reported to Google. All seven are classified as high risk, three are use-after-free vulnerabilities in the PDF viewer (CVE-2022-3196 to -3198). As always, Google is silent about the internally found vulnerabilities. As a rule, Chrome updates itself automatically when a new version is available. With ”

Other Chromium-based browsers
Brave 1.43.93 was released on the same day as Chrome and also includes the updated Chromium base 105.0.5195.127. Vivaldi is just as fast, but continues to go its own way, skipping odd Chromium versions (like 105). Instead, the manufacturer relies on the Extended Stable Channel of the previous version 104. The latest Vivaldi version 5.4.2753.51 contains Chromium 104.0.5112.126. The security gaps have also been patched there.

Opera finally made the switch to the new major version 91 (91.0.4516.16) on September 14th. However, Chromium 105.0.5195.102 is still used as the basis. That means the Norwegians have to step up their game again to get to the same level as Chrome and Brave. Microsoft Edge 105.0.1343.33 also contains Chromium 105.0.5195.102. An update should follow in the next few days.
Already on September 13, Google released Chrome 105.0.5195.124 for Android and Chrome 105.0.5195.129 for iOS. Google will release Chrome 106 on September 27th.
