hackers could change the color of Erasmus Bridge for years

It has been possible for everyone to adjust the colors of the Erasmus Bridge. One of the digital entrance gates of the famous Rotterdam bridge has, until today, been open wide for over a year.

This becomes apparent after reporting RTL News. Unauthorized persons could therefore adjust the lighting of the bridge over the Nieuwe Maas.

Tech journalist Daniël Verlaan from RTL News yesterday temporarily turned the bridge pink and then gave it the colors of the rainbow. He tells about his special promotion on Twitter.

The online system should be password protected, but a security leak allowed people to access the panel without this authorization.

According to RTL News the color of the lighting could be adjusted in this way. The colors of the Dutch flag, the club colors of Feyenoord and rainbow colors were options.

Verlaan received a tip from an anonymous person, he reveals. “A public thank you to the anonymous tipster, who found the leaky system via Shodan (search engine for internet of things) by searching for “Rotterdam”. Yes really. He was also shocked by it. ”

Rotterdam has decommissioned the online panel after discovery of the leak. “A final solution to prevent a security leak in the future is still being worked on,” said the spokesman.
