The Luxembourg football world is in mourning. The former president of the FLF and FC Wiltz has died at the age of 68. Henri Roemer was an emblematic figure in the north of the country.

“He still regularly attended team matches when his health permitted,” said Michael Schenk, president of FC Wiltz. “He was viscerally attached to the club and was re-elected to the committee in July. He had just handed over the hotel to his son to devote himself even more to FC Wiltz. He knew football by heart. Of course, he was a strong personality and we might not belong to the same political party, our debates were often constructive, ”says the President of Wiltz.

Diplomat in Paris

Born in 1951, Henri Roemer studied at the Luxembourg University Center before moving on to the Université Libre de Bruxelles then the Hautes Ecoles de Relations Internationales in Paris.

In 1981, he became Luxembourg consul in the French capital. A function that he will exercise until 1988. Before that, the one who wore the national team jersey five times had made an honest career as a footballer at Aris Bonnevoie. A journey that ended in 1976 following a serious injury to a leg.

With the capital club, Henri Roemer won the national title in 1972 and lost a Luxembourg Cup final the same year against the Red Boys Differdange.

Member of FC Wiltz since 1981, Henri Roemer held several positions there before becoming president of the FLF in January 1998. At the extraordinary congress in Bettembourg, he was elected in the second round, beating former referee Roger Philippi.

Friend of Platini

Successor of Norbert Konter, he was then overthrown by Paul Philipp in 2004. Ironically, Henri Roemer had pushed the current president of the FLF towards the exit to place Allan Simonsen there.

Because the Wiltzois did not lack connections in the international concert. A member of the UEFA executive committee, he was quite close to Michel Platini whom he had brought to Mondercange. He also spent five years, between 2001 and 2006, on the FIFA Legal Committee.

Henri Roemer had achieved a fantastic media stunt by attracting Allan Simonsen. From a sporting standpoint, it did not work.

Never stingy with anecdotes, Henri Roemer was swarming with ideas such as introducing a team of young Luxembourgers into German football.

Roemer was also very involved in the media (RTL) and in politics (DP). He died overnight from Saturday to Sunday.
