From Monday, January 18, 2021, an FFP2 mask is mandatory in Bavaria. This makes Bavaria the first federal state in Germany to tighten the general mask requirement. From the key date, FFP2 masks must be worn there in retail and public transport. Since FFP2 masks not only offer external protection, but also protect the wearer from at least 94 percent of the pollutants in the air as well as droplets and aerosols, this is intended to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Criticism of FFP2 mask requirement

The tightening of the mask requirement in Bavaria has caused criticism in parts of the population. FFP2 masks are significantly more expensive than community masks or medical masks and, as a single-use product, cannot be reused. This could exclude low-income people from public life.

Social associations have also criticized the new mask requirement. In response, the Bavarian state government has announced that it will provide 2.5 million FFP2 masks for those in need. Persons who are dependent on basic social security are eligible.

Buy cheap FFP2 masks

Because the FFP2 masks could also become a financial burden for many retirees, students, low-wage earners, families or other sections of the population with limited income in the long run, we were looking for cheap offers for certified FFP2 masks.

Note: The masks in this list cost between 1.50 euros and 1.62 euros per mask. We have also found offers for only 0.72 euros per mask. However, based on the reviews of Amazon customers, we suspect that these are fakes without a real certificate. Read here which labels you should always pay attention to when buying FFP2 masks:

10 FFP2 masks for 1.60 per mask

Aosanity – 10 FFP2 masks – 15.99 euros at Amazon *

20 FFP2 masks for 1.50 euros per mask

TBOC – 20 FFP2 masks – 29.99 euros on Amazon *

40 FFP2 masks for 1.62 euros per mask

HHW Pro – 40 FFP2 masks – 69.00 euros at Amazon *

Reuse FFP2 mask

FFP2 masks are single-use products and should not be reused. Due to their high price, however, this is not realistic for some consumers. In order to be able to reuse the masks, researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign recommend heating them in a rice cooker for 50 minutes without water after use. This decontaminates them without losing their filter function or fit. If you don’t have a rice cooker, you can let the mask air out for at least seven days at room temperature. The Münster University of Applied Sciences provides more detailed information in this article.
