If you want to hide a folder or just a single file from the eyes of other PC users, this is generally possible with on-board equipment. It works better with the Freeware Easy File Locker.
Hide folders and files with Easy File Locker
In Windows Explorer you can mark files and directories as hidden using the context menu. Now click with the right mouse button on “Properties -› Hidden “. However, this only works to a limited extent, because the objects marked in this way only disappear if objects hidden in the properties of Windows Explorer are not displayed. This can be controlled via “View -› Hidden Elements “. This hiding protection is too bad to hide important things.
Install Easy File Locker:
It works better with the freeware Easy File Locker. Although this is a bit older, it still works perfectly. A little problem can arise during installation. If you have activated the “Watched folder” function for your standard folder under Windows 10, you cannot install this tool. However, you will receive a notification from Windows that indicates the problem. In this case, go to “Windows logo -› Windows security – ›Viruses & threat protection -› Protection history ”. There you will now find the information about the blocked file “EFL2.2._Setup (x64) .exe” and can allow this file by clicking on the information and on “Action”. In our test, we had to allow the Easy File Locker again after the installation via protection history.
The freeware Easy File Locker hides individual files or entire folders. Clicking the stop symbol makes the folders visible again in Windows Explorer.
Use Easy File Locker:
Handling is easy. In Easy File Locker, click the folder icon with the plus to hide an existing folder. You can hide a file using the file symbol with the plus. After selecting the folder, it immediately disappears from Windows Explorer. If you opened the folder in Windows Explorer at the time of hiding, it will remain displayed in this Explorer window until you select another folder.
If you want to make the folder or a file visible again, click on the stop symbol in the Easy File Locker toolbar. The play symbol then activates the hide again.
If you know the name and the path to a hidden folder or a hidden file, you can enter it in the address bar of Windows Explorer and open the folder or file by pressing Enter. You should therefore not think up any guessable folder names. We only classify this behavior as a small lack of security, which can be used as a gain in comfort. For example, you can keep the folder “C: My Secret” hidden and still the Excel file “Numbers.” xlsx “via Windows Explorer. To do this, simply enter C: My Secret Numbers.xlsx in the Explorer and press the Enter key. It starts your spreadsheet with the hidden file.
