Whatsapp is working on the ability to hide the current online status from everyone in a new version. The function is already in development and should be included in one of the future updates. Users have been asking for this feature for a long time.

As discovered by WABetaInfo, Whatsapp will soon allow to hide online status from everyone else. So far, users can only choose to show their “Last Seen” information for contacts, some people, or no one. In a future version of the app, Whatsapp will offer its users a similar approach to “now online” as well.
The release explains how this feature will work:
It will be possible to control who can see when you’re online directly in the “Last Seen” settings. There will be the following options: “Everyone” and “Last online”. For example, if you select “My contacts” for “Last seen” and “Like last seen” for online status, this means that users who are not saved in your contacts cannot see when you are online.
Although the screenshot shows the feature of Whatsapp iOS beta, according to WABetaInfo, Whatsapp plans to introduce the feature in a future update of Whatsapp Android beta and desktop beta as well. Details on when this feature will be released to the public are not yet available.
