In an action against the ‘Ndrangheta Mafia in the southern Italian region of Calabria, the police arrested a high-ranking politician and 18 other suspects. According to media reports, the politician is none other than the President of Parliament of Calabria, Domenico Tallini.
The politician of Forza Italia – the party of the former interior minister Matteo Salvini – is accused of trading in votes and involvement in an influential clan of the ‘Ndrangheta, the Calabrian mafia.
Another 18 people are being investigated who are accused of possession of weapons, extortion, stolen goods and violence against the security forces, according to the judicial authorities. The investigation is led by the well-known Calabrian anti-mafia prosecutor Nicola Gratteri.

According to the police, Tallini is accused of speeding up administrative procedures in order to obtain permits for the criminal Grande Aracri family. According to the police, the clan needed this to open a network of pharmacies, especially in Calabria. In return, the criminals are said to have supported the president in the regional election in November 2014.
