The new flagship of the P40 series will of course continue to be supplied with updates.

Software updates on smartphones not only ensure that the latest apps always run on the cell phone and bugs are eliminated, they are also essential for security: the longer no software update has been carried out, the higher the chance of becoming a victim Hacker attack, data theft or becoming malware.

Like many of its competitors, the Chinese manufacturer Huawei does not provide its smartphones with security updates endlessly – but usually only three years after the purchase date. Even if these update cycles are not set in stone, Huawei users should look around for a new model after around three years. Or they have to do without security updates.

Huawei distinguishes its products, which are still supplied with updates, into two categories:

  • The latest devices like the Huawei P30, the Mate 30 or the Honor 20, which are updated with security updates every month.
  • The slightly older models such as the Huawei P30 lite, the Mate 20 lite or the Honor 9i, which only receive updates every three months.

Here is the full overview that Huawei provides:

IMPORTANT: The list is continuously updated by Huawei (as of May 27th). If your device no longer appears in the list after an update, it does not necessarily mean that the smartphone will definitely not receive any updates.

In addition, newer devices of the P40 series are not yet listed. The P20 (Pro) is also no longer included in the latest version of the list, but it can be assumed that the P20 and P20 Pro models will continue to receive security updates. Also no longer in the list and the Mate 10 Pro is still supported.
