WIGAN (NewsABC.net / DPA) – Hull City had a dramatic evening at Wigan Athletic in the Championship, the second English professional level. Defender Jordy de Wijs’s team (ex-PSV and ex-Excelsior) lost with historical figures: 8-0. At half-time, the superior home club already led 7-0. Kieran Dowell was the top scorer of the game with three hits.
According to data agency Opta, Hull City equaled the low point of the club in a league in 1911 with that shameful defeat, when Wolverhampton Wanderers also lost 8-0.
For Wigan Athletic, it was the biggest league win ever in club history. Nevertheless, the ailing Wigan is threatened with a deduction of twelve points because of the poor financial management. This would put Wigan, which has applied for deferment of payment, in a risk of relegation. Hull City is also not at all safe with two rounds of competition.
