With Hyper-V, Windows 10 comes with powerful virtualization for free. This is how the first steps work.
Hyper-V is Microsoft’s answer to Virtualbox, Vmware and Co.
With the Microsoft virtualizer, you install a second Windows system or Linux in an isolated environment. You can use snapshots to save the current status in the virtual environment and reset the system to a previous status at a later point in time. The virtual second system is suitable for testing new software, for example.
Hyper-V is a fundamental part of Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise (both 64-bit versions), but it is not installed automatically. To activate it, enter “Activate or deactivate Windows features” in the search input field next to the start menu. In the new window, check the list in front of “Hyper-V”; the two subsections “Hyper-V platform” and “Hyper-V management tools” are automatically adopted. Confirm the change with “OK” and restart your computer.
Microsoft software: With Hyper-V quick creation, new virtual machines based on Windows 10 Enterprise and Ubuntu Linux can be created in no time with just a few clicks of the mouse.
A wizard will help you create a new virtual machine in Hyper-V Manager. This will guide you through all the necessary steps and the selection of the appropriate settings. Once the virtual machine has been set up, the operating system must be installed.
But it is even easier:
With a function update for Windows 10, Microsoft introduced the “Hyper-V Quick Creation” app in autumn 2018, with which you can easily create new virtual computers: MSIX Packaging Tool Environment, Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS, Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS and Windows -10 development environment. The two Windows VMs are based on Windows 10 Enterprise. After clicking on “Create virtual computer”, when the Windows 10 development environment is selected, an approximately 16.6 GB image file is loaded from the Internet, checked and integrated into Hyper-V. Finished!
Can you use software in the VM?
