Hyundai Ioniq 6 (2022): New electric sedan is delayed

The highly anticipated second model from Hyundai’s electric brand, the Ioniq 6, is apparently delayed. “The Korea Economic Daily” reports that the Sedan will not be presented until mid-2022. So far it has been said that the premiere should take place at the beginning of next year. The report also gives reasons for the delay: This is how it appears at Hyundai not yet satisfied with the design to be, which is why the headlights and the aprons front and rear would be revised.

In addition, the electric car should grow a bit: the body should 20 millimeters longer and are thus just under 4.90 meters. The third and most interesting reason concerns the drive. Over the last few meters, the decision was apparently made to equip the electric sedan with a larger battery than that of the SUV brother Ioniq 5. Instead of 72.6 kWh the battery of the Ioniq 6 should therefore store 77.4 kWh and thus enable a range of up to 500 kilometers. It is unclear whether there will be an entry-level model with 58 kWh, as with the Ioniq 5.

Fast charging thanks to 800 volt technology

A new platform from Hyundai serves as the basis for the electric sedan. The E-GMP floor assembly is to be the cornerstone of Hyundai’s electrical strategy in the future. The substructure offers an 800-volt architecture for fast charging and a modular structure. This allows scaling to different vehicle classes. A high level of expansion is at least conceivable for the Ioniq 6. The key data could therefore be the following:

● total output of up to 600 PS possible

● Top speed: up to 260 km / h

● Acceleration: to 100 km / h in less than 3.5 seconds

● 800 volt quick charge function

● Ideally, charging time of just 18 minutes to a charge level of 80 percent, five minutes per 100 km

The data is based on the top values of the new platform. It is quite possible that Hyundai will correct this downwards to leave room for a real sports model.

Hyundai Prophecy study gave an outlook on the design

As for the design, there were already At the beginning of 2020 the Prophecy study (for the seat sample) an outlook on the Sports sedan. The profile of the concept car is somewhat reminiscent of the Porsche Taycan and has the short overhangs typical of electric cars. While the Koreans were very cautious about the front design, the horses went through with the designers at the rear. Instead of classic rear lights, individual LED points attract attention.
Hyundai Prophecy Study

The Ioniq 6 could take over the big screen from the Prophecy show car. The joystick control remains a study gimmick.

Inside was the first check no steering wheel instead, the vehicle should be controlled using two joysticks. The Ioniq 6, on the other hand, will be equipped with a classic steering wheel. However, the large screen, which covered the entire width of the interior in the concept car, could serve as an instrument panel in the production model. The final design is currently the biggest unknown with the Ioniq 6.
