Hyundai Santa Fe: 100,000-kilometer endurance test – AUTO BILD

Most of us know such colleagues. Quiet guys from the second row. Those who don’t push their way forward loudly in every conference, but quietly and effectively get rid of a lot behind the scenes. Guys who don’t care about themselves. Just such a guy came to us in July 2019: the Hyundai Santa Fe. Although presented only a year earlier, he immediately looked like an old friend. One of the stately kind. With a length of 4.77 meters and a width of 1.89 meters test chief Gerald Czajka found him “borderline big” in the city.

The impression of the cozy bear continued even outside of town. With the high-torque 2.2-liter diesel and the smooth-acting eight-speed automatic converter invited the Santa Fe for casual cruising. The unit showed a North German character: at first a bit grumpy, but then after a short time courteous and gripping. In addition, frugal. At 140 km / h, the two-ton steamer sufficed with seven liters of diesel. The “thick coziness of an old Mitsubishi Pajero” attests him AUTO BILD KLASSIK colleague Martin Puthz, who learned to appreciate the Korean on business trips.

The Santa Fe has the character of a “good-natured travel steamer”

Right from the start, the cockpit looked as old-fashioned as the assistance systems in terms of design and function.

However, a look at the average consumption over the entire test distance, 8.5 liters, shows that many colleagues were in a much more hurry and often rushed the speedometer needle above the 200 mark. That works quite well despite the large frontal area. At least as long as it stays dry. As with other corporate brothers, the wiper motor is too slack for the German Autobahn speed, and from 160 km / h it only pulls the rubber lips over the windshield with the last of its force. But also that comfortable wide armchair and the somewhat indirect steering underpinned the character of the “good-natured travel steamer”, as Manfred Klangwald raved about in the logbook. He found the service to be “not modern, but rather familiar”. However, this could also be due to the fact that the Santa Fe was before the facelift not yet the newest generation of systems had moved in. The navigation system lagged behind modern devices in terms of operation and display. The voice control worked rudimentary at best. The sign recognition made serious mistakes again and again and lost the necessary trust. The overzealous Lane Assistant’s best function was the button on the steering wheel to turn it off.

on Split opinions also raised the design of the interior. While editor-in-chief Tom Drechsler identified “terrible interior colors”, colleague Dirk Branke enjoyed “taste and style on board”. At least they agreed on the impeccable service. A car that newbies didn’t have to learn. Consistently There was also praise for the huge amount of space and the variable trunk.

With 84.5 centimeters of clearance in the cargo space, the bike even fits in standing without a front wheel. Unfortunately, the loading sill is very high.

Whether with five people or with complete video equipment for the appointment, the Santa Fe handled everything with ease. However, the hard use also visible at the end of the test. The seats and steering wheel had a greasy shine, and the paintwork on the driver’s backrest was peeled off at some point. To be fair, however, you have to note that such a long-term tester is only ever one Minimum level of care gets, while the maximum is demanded of him. Well-protected Santa Fe from private hands should usually do better with this mileage. However, that was independent of care A-pillar cladding that falls off again and againwhich was an entertaining co-driver’s shock right up to the end.

Annoying: the beginning of corrosion in the side member

It would have been a shock because of that unprotected sub-floor Incidentally, also given in the field, which we spared him as well as heavy trailers that the measly tensile load of two tons would not have allowed anyway. A real flaw. But because the Santa Fe was stressed enough, we were particularly excited about the dismantling. The build-up of carbon on intake valves and ducts is unfortunately simply a part of modern diesel engines today. The something oily turbocharger and the damaged slide rail in the chain drive already worry more. That is annoying too incipient corrosion in the side members. A consequence of the very uneven distribution of protective wax. Little things? Perhaps. But in a few years they can become an expensive problem. After all, the transmission, exhaust system and electrics are at their best, so that the Santa Fe in the end a smooth 2 can book for itself. Our affection as well. We already miss our beloved colleague.
