“I think we have to stop there”

Paul Philipp, president of the FLF believes that the current season should end there. But the former national coach remains suspended from the decision of the UEFA executive committee, scheduled for next Thursday.

(JFC, with jot) – Prime Minister Xavier Bettel (DP) announced on Wednesday the cancellation of all sporting events in Luxembourg until July 31 due to the coronavirus pandemic. For its part, if the Football Federation (FLF) had already decreed the cancellation of all youth competitions this season, it had just decided to suspend all matches until April 27 for seniors. Does this mean that the end of the current season will be played in August?

Paul Philipp, the president of the FLF does not beat around the bush. “I would say we must stop there,” insists the former player and coach of Roud L√©iwen. If according to him, it is therefore necessary to put a definitive end to the current season, Philipp prefers however “to decide nothing before the videoconference of UEFA on Tuesday”. Prudently, the president thinks above all of “protecting our best clubs.” Scalded by the Belgian example, Philipp does not forget that “UEFA had threatened not to admit any Belgian team to the European Cup after our neighbors expressed the wish not to end the season.”

FIFA President Gianni Infantino admitted on Thursday that “no one” knew when football could be “started as it was”, which had been shutdown almost everywhere in the world because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The European football governing body wants to first consult its 55 member associations, while next Thursday the UEFA executive committee will decide. “I imagine that UEFA will no longer insist on the fact that the current season must at all costs be played to the end,” augurs the president. Paul Philipp, however, hopes that UEFA will qualify his decision between the small and large European championships, as the latter depend on television revenues.
