Since 1 March, it has been part of the Pillows chain, which now has seven hotels, including Deventer and Amsterdam and Zwolle. The doors opened fully in the lockdown, but the confidence is there because “more than ever, people are looking for nice places close to home”.
Time to find out whether the hotel on the IJssel is such a nice place! In any case, the arrival already promises a lot of good. The view is impressive, even with dark threatening clouds above it, with the Hanseatic city in full view and the famous Lebuinuskerk squeaking stately above it. A view that is and continues to be present everywhere in our room, the Deventer suite, thanks to the large windows.
The meandering IJssel from left to right, consistently traversed by the back and forth sailing ferry. The beautiful buildings on the other side that still characterize the prosperity of the Hanseatic city, the Wilhelmina Bridge on the left: you just keep looking. The hotel has a total of 29 rooms. The ones at the back have a view of Worpplantsoen, the oldest park in the Netherlands. Not bad either.
The entrance with marble floor is just as stately as the building. It still smells new: after all, the anthracite carpet in the room is still like new. There is something to see everywhere: the webbing bench behind the large bed with Egyptian linen is completely contemporary and the white bench is never to get off again.
Design accessories are everywhere: on the black marble-look table by the large round mirror, on the large cupboard upon entry, on the white shelves in the niche, on the bedside tables … It gives a homely feeling, even if the size of the room there also contribute. It is in line with the hotel’s philosophy of creating a place “that is better than home”.
In the evening we are surprised with a sublime four-course dinner from the adjacent restaurant IJssel, where each course is placed completely corona-proof on a table in the hallway and explained. In any case, it is good to notice that the hotel was set up in times of corona: the holder for paper towels instead of the standard cloth towel in the toilet is a typical example of this.
The next day we take the ferry that we saw sailing back and forth so often the day and night before. Guests who book directly with the hotel will receive an additional crossing. For a moment we feel like a tourist again and after a visit to the beautiful city center of Deventer we can indeed conclude that Pillows Luxury Boutique Hotel Aan De IJssel is a nice place.
Comfortable design with a fun twist in accessories such as the papier-mâché cups and the works of art in the niche and on the table.
Right on the IJssel, with a ferry that takes guests to the city on the other side.
Warm, open, friendly: the joy and enthusiasm are contagious.
