When setting up a network printer, it often takes a few minutes before the device is displayed in the overview. We will show you how to accelerate the integration of the printer in Windows.
If you set up a shared network printer on your computer via the control panel and “Devices and Printers -› Add Printer “, it often takes a few minutes before the device is displayed in the overview. The same phenomenon occurs when deleting the printer, and this process can take a few minutes.
The reason is that when setting up a printer, Windows gets the latest device metadata from the Internet. These include the icon of the model and the apps supplied. As a rule, however, the printer also works without this software; it can also be downloaded and installed manually afterwards.
You can therefore deactivate the search and download of the metadata and thus accelerate the integration of the printer in Windows. You have three options. The easiest way is via the Windows “Settings”: Click on “System -› Info ”and scroll down. Click on the “Advanced system settings” link and switch to the “Hardware” tab. Click on “Device installation settings”, mark “No” in the following window and confirm with “Save changes”.
You can use the group policy editor to specify that Windows does not automatically search for icons and software when mapping and setting up a new network printer.
But you can also change a group policy. Type gpedit into the search field on the taskbar and click on “Edit group policy”. Click through to “Computer Configuration -› Administrative Templates – ›System -› Device Installation – ›Prevent retrieval of device metadata from the Internet”. Select “Activated” and close all windows with “OK”.
Alternatively, you can edit the registry: Type regedit in the search field on the taskbar and click on the hit “Registry Editor”. Open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER ControlPanel Desktop and click with the right mouse button in the right window. Go to “New -› DWORD value (32-bit) ”and give the new entry the name MetadataPreventDeviceMetadataFromNetwork. Double click on it and set the value to “1”.
