IT services are booming: Corona crisis helps Microsoft jump in profit

The world’s largest software company is benefiting from the corona pandemic. Many now work from home to protect against the virus. Teams has 115 million daily users. That’s 40 million more than six months ago.

The business with cloud applications and IT services is booming. This year the company has increased its market value by a third to $ 1.6 trillion. But it’s not just the Teams program that scores points. There was also strong demand for the gaming business relating to the Xbox game console and Microsoft’s “Surface” tablets, with sales increasing by 30 and 37 percent respectively.

Overall, the PC division, which also includes the Windows operating system, posted a six percent increase in revenues to $ 11.8 billion. Microsoft has not been able to harm the corona crisis so far, the share has risen by more than 36 percent since the beginning of the year.

As the Handelsblatt reports, the LinkedIn platform, which belongs to Microsoft, was also able to increase revenues by 16 percent. In addition, Microsoft bought the US game developer ZeniMax Media in September for 7.5 billion dollars and thus successful titles such as “Doom” and “Fallout”.

Microsoft clearly exceeded the expectations of the Wall Street analysts, and the stock initially reacted with price increases after the trading hours. The lucrative business with cloud services for other companies and apps continued to grow – Microsoft’s Azure platform increased revenues by 48 percent. The group also benefited from the pandemic-induced trend towards home work with its office programs.
