Jaguar F-Pace: used car test – How To Cars

Committed to the landed gentry: From 2015, Jaguar secured a piece of the booming SUV business with its first high seat, the F-Pace. Visually, the English have shown once again that they have an excellent understanding of elegant design. Considerable design effort was put into this: Like the XE and XF sedans, the F-Pace is based on the in-house modular Jaguar Land Rover platform (D8) and consists of a high-strength aluminum structure.

Unfortunately, beauty and bodywork are not enough in the long run. Our test car, which was first registered in November 2017, is the 180 hp diesel variant 20d with the Prestige package and rear-wheel drive. According to the Schwacke database, it cost a noble 49,570 euros new with a few extras. After 95,448 kilometers, the price has more than halved, the mid-range SUV is in the yard at the Autohus in Bockel near Bremen for an affordable 22,480 euros.

Jaguar F-Pace used: The driving impression is not flawless

Visually, this low-priced offer shows its somewhat careless previous owner. The door and side panel on the right should be touched up due to slight grazing damage, which, together with thorough preparation, should cost a good 1000 euros.

And the driving impression is not flawless either, despite the complex chassis with aluminum double wishbone axle at the front and aluminum integral axle at the rear. The handling is sporty, but the rear axle rumbles audibly and the brakes rumble – not untypical for an older F-Pace – on our test drive with stronger braking maneuvers on the motorway.

Jaguar F Pace

Tastefully designed cockpit, but surprisingly simple surfaces in detail.

The interior comes off better: size and design have little of the unexpected intimacy of old XJ sedans. Here you can experience automotive Cool Britannia. And the format is also good enough to please families of four who peer out of their mid-size station wagons at the F-Pace built at Jaguar Land Rover’s Sullihull plant in England. The trunk can be expanded with a 40:20:40 folding rear backrest and, with 650 to 1740 liters of storage volume, offers more than just ample space for luggage.

The material quality only meets the premium claim to a limited extent

However, the quality of the material presupposes a greater basic enthusiasm for the brand: it only does limited justice to the premium claim of the noble Brits. In addition to the not entirely up-to-date ICTP infotainment system, a number of qualitatively mixed interior materials catch the eye. At the top, the impression is still quite fine, but in the lower area, on the center console and around the dirt-sensitive entrances, Jaguar built very simple-looking plastics.

The seat surfaces of the leather-covered front seats also appear strangely flat. The in-house Ingenium diesel (emission standard Euro 6), which is also installed in models from the sister brand Land Rover, has a mixed effect. Despite proper insulation, it makes no secret of its combustion principle and runs cold with significant vibrations when stationary. A slight turbo lag when starting is also annoying. The 30d engines (from 2020: D300) with six cylinders are more cultivated. But be careful: Owners repeatedly report timing chain and turbocharger problems.

High maintenance costs for V6 and V8 variants

In view of the salty tariffs in Jaguar brand workshops and the few freelance specialists, flawlessness when buying and a used car guarantee for prospective big cat owners are urgently recommended. This is especially true for the versions with V6 and V8 petrol engines, which are even more expensive to maintain. These offer enormous driving pleasure, but also cause maintenance costs as in the upper class.
