Joggers less at risk of covid

If no direct link is established between a sport and the fact of contracting the coronavirus, studies have shown that the practice of a discipline is not always trivial. Also pay attention to the side effects which can sometimes be dangerous.

If you practice team sport – preferably in an enclosed area with close contact – your risk of contracting the virus is much greater than if you are a Nordic walking enthusiast. This is the main trend that emerges from the vast survey carried out by the French daily The world. To carry out these investigations, our colleagues notably consulted the scientific reports of the Australian Institute of Sport and of the Polytechnic of Turin but also the protocols put in place by the various federations.

Among the conclusions, it therefore appears that sports practiced in a group in a confined space (fitness, dance, squash, etc.) but also team sports based on contacts (football, handball, rugby, basketball) or even martial arts involving bodies -to-body (wrestling or judo) present the greatest risk of contamination.

The next two official Progrès matches have been postponed. Three players and the doctor from the Niederkorn club have indeed contracted the virus.

In their analysis, the Australian experts propose, for example, “to reduce the practice of judo to physical training alone and to technical exercises in pairs in a mirror (face-to-face remote, non-contact)”. As for squash, it is considered one of the most risky sports because of the “high virus circulation zone” in the playing area.

And The world to recall that last March in Maribor in Slovenia, a positive person infected four others in a squash center, without having been in direct contact with two of them. The latter had however taken over in the room 45 minutes after his departure. This news item was notably the subject of a scientific publication.

Indirect contamination

Conversely, individual outdoor sports (canoeing, Nordic walking, swimming, skiing, etc.) present reduced risks. Some racket or even collective sports are doing well, because they are practiced in the open air without close contact (tennis, baseball).

It should also be noted that sports that are inherently low-risk can be pretexts for indirect contamination, as many clusters have shown during training sessions. Changing rooms, faucet handles, basin ramps, showers, braces, carpooling … The side effects of physical activity are sometimes as risky as the activity itself.

That said, academic studies on sports clusters are scarce and often direct evidence is lacking. It emerges a certain hesitation. And, as recalled The world, “The most popular sports are statistically more likely to be affected by positive cases”.

In Luxembourg, unsurprisingly, it is football that has the most licensees, more than 50,000 according to the 2019 activity report of the Ministry of Sports, far ahead of tennis (15,000) and gymnastics (7,620). Certainly, one or the other cluster has been observed, during the summer at Fola and these last days on the side of Niederkorn, but the king sport is not strictly speaking a source of contamination even if the risk of contracting the virus is higher there than if you practice running.
